Text size and colour, outline colour and width, letter case, background, word highlight, layout effect, animation and position all behave exactly as they do in English.
Three things to watch for in German
- Compound nouns make very long single words. One German word can be longer than a whole English caption line. A word that cannot fit gets scaled down or wraps awkwardly, so compounds are the case to check on a vertical clip.
- Capitalisation is grammatical. Every noun is capitalised. If you turn on the all-caps letter case control, that distinction disappears — which is fine stylistically, but it is a real change to the text rather than a purely visual one.
- ß and the umlauts must survive the font. All but one of the 18 caption fonts carry them. Flying Bubble does not, so a German caption set in it will show substituted letters mid-word.
