Two short lines beat one long one
Capster breaks captions at sensible points automatically, and you can split any line by hand where it reads better.
Instagram Reels
To add captions to an Instagram Reel, caption the clip on your iPhone before you upload it. Capster transcribes the audio, times every word, and burns the captions into the exported file. The Reel you post already has them, styled the way you chose, visible to every viewer with no sticker and nothing to switch on.

| Instagram's sticker | Burned into the file | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | In the Reel, on Instagram | In the video's pixels, wherever it goes |
| Look | Instagram's fonts and placement | 9 presets, or your own font, colour, outline and position |
| Reusing the clip elsewhere | Captions are lost | Same captions on TikTok, Shorts, anywhere |
| Fixing a misheard word | Edit in the sticker before posting | Edit in the app, re-export |
| Machine-readable for accessibility | Yes | No — add the sticker too if that matters |
These are not exclusive. Burn your styled captions in, and switch the sticker on as well if you want Instagram's accessibility layer.
Reels are watched one-handed, at arm's length, often outdoors. That rules out a lot of typography that looks fine on a laptop.

Plain white text vanishes over a bright sky. An outline is free in Capster; a caption background is part of Pro.
Word-by-word highlight is the single change that most improves watch-through on muted video. The styles that do it are here.
Caption the clip before you upload it. Import it into Capster, let the audio transcribe, choose a style, and export. The captions are rendered into the video file, so the Reel you upload already carries them and nobody has to switch anything on.
Use it as well if you want the accessibility layer. It styles the text Instagram's way, places it Instagram's way, and only exists inside that Reel. Captions in the file look how you designed them and stay with the video on every other platform.
The bottom of the frame carries your username, the caption text and the audio row, and the right edge carries the like, comment, share and menu buttons. Keep captions above the bottom third and clear of the right side and they stay readable.
Instagram shows Reels in more than one place and crops the frame differently in some of them. Captions placed near the centre survive every crop; captions pushed to an edge to dodge one layout get cut off in another.
There is no evidence either way, and nobody outside Instagram can tell you. What is measurable is that a large share of short-form video is watched with the sound off, and readable text on screen keeps those viewers watching.
